1911 T205 Gold Border Christy Mathewson PSA NM-MT 8

Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $23,700

Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA. Absolutely stunning, unbelievably high-grade Christy Mathewson card from the T205 Gold Borders, one of the most popular of all 1910-era tobacco issues. This is a simply extraordinary example of one of tobacco-card collecting's great classics. It is also without question one of the finest T205 Mathewsons that Robert Edward Auctions has ever offered. Any T205 Gold Border in this extraordinary condition would be incredible, let alone Christy Mathewson. This is one of only seven examples graded at this impressive level by PSA (with only a sole MINT 9 higher) out of 555 Mathewson T205s evaluated to date. Even more impressively, only 188 cards (of any subject) have graded NM-MT 8 or higher out of 28,988 cards graded to date by PSA which makes this important Hall of Fame card particularly more noteworthy. The card displays only the slightest hint of white at the top left corner, with nearly imperceptible touches to the extreme tips of the other three corners visible only under the closest inspection. A tiny hint of chipping (almost impossible to see but mentioned for the sake of accuracy) to the gold near the center of the extreme edge of the left border is present; otherwise the easily-chipped gold borders are without any white showing whatsoever. Near perfect centering all around, this striking gem has flawless colors and perfect registration. The Sweet Caporal reverse of the card is exceptionally bright and clean with crisp, bold red text. A small surface imperfection is visible in the lower right reverse corner but does not detract from the overall exceptional presentation of this gem. This is an amazing high-grade T205 example of Christy Mathewson, one of baseball's greatest legends, from one of collecting's most classic and condition-sensitive sets. The SMR value is $23,500. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000/$20,000+. SOLD FOR $23,700
