1952 Topps #311 Mickey Mantle

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $15,405

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Extremely attractive Vg-Ex example of the 1952 Topps #311 Mickey Mantle. One of card collecting's greatest classics, Mantle's Topps rookie card is the key to the 1952 Topps set, one of the most famous of all cards, and the single most popular and valuable postwar baseball card. This is an exceptional example with a crisp, flawlessly registered image, and near-perfect centering (very slightly to the top, approximately 40/60 T/B) which is a particularly desirable (and often absent) quality for this card. There is the lightest hint of surface wear to the blue background, as well as light corner wear (a little more in the lower left). No creases. Clean, boldly printed reverse with a small, unobtrusive area of discoloration in the lower left of reverse (when held horizontally as intended), which is very difficult to see and may not show up in scans and so is mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy. This card falls short of Ex due to light wear but retains extremely strong visual appeal. An impressive yet still relatively affordable 1952 Topps #311 Mantle rookie (the PSA NM-MT+ 8.5 in REA's May 2013 sale, for example, sold for a record-setting $272,550!), this is a magnificent example of Mickey Mantle's most celebrated card in an extremely desirable grade. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $15,405
