1975-1976 O-Pee-Chee WHA Hockey Near-Complete Wax Box (39 Packs)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $4,740
Extremely rare near-complete wax box of 1975-1976 O-Pee-Chee WHA hockey cards, featuring thirty-nine of forty-eight packs which comprise a complete box. The set was produced by O-Pee-Chee as a parallel to its regular issue in order to feature players from the World Hockey Association, which had been created just a few years earlier in an attempt to compete with the well-established National Hockey League. Several Hall of Famers are featured within the 132-card set, including Gordie Howe and Bobby Hull, and the key rookie card is that of Mark Howe, Gordie's son. Wax boxes from this issue are very rarely seen, and this box is missing only nine packs from its original form. Thirty-two of the packs included within are crisp and fresh, grading Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt. Six packs display slight wear to one edge (from pressure during storage) and grade Ex. One pack is opened entirely. The display box presents with bold colors but is technically in low-grade condition as the top panel is secured to the box by means of tape, as is one of the side flaps. This is an outstanding near-complete wax box. Total: 39 packs. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $4,740
