1974 Topps Deckle Edge "Proof" Uncut Sheets (2)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $711

Pair of original 1974 Topps Deckle Edge "Proof" uncut final production sheets, each containing thirty-six cards with gray backs arranged in four rows of nine cards for a total of seventy-two cards. The identical sheets are comprised of unnumbered cards corresponding to #36-72 as listed in the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards. Interestingly, 1974 Topps Deckle Edge cards are usually numbered, but none of the cards on these two sheets display a number which would normally be found in a small circle to the left of the blue script on the reverse. While we cannot be sure why, it is possible that Topps printed the numbers on a final run through the presses and these sheets were removed prior to that run, or that these are early proof sheets printed before they decided to add card numbers. Whatever the explanation, the backs definitely do not have numbers, so each card is an unnumbered variation. Eleven Hall of Famers are featured on each sheet, including Hank Aaron, Nolan Ryan, and Johnny Bench. The 1974 Topps Deckle Edge set was a test issue which received very limited distribution only in the Massachusetts area. When these cards were issued, as their name implies, they were cut with deckle edges. "Proof" versions, as offered here, are sometimes found cut with straight edges (hand-cut cut from sheets). The two sheets present extremely well with normal edge and corner wear as is common due to their large size and difficulty to store. The sheets are largely free of wrinkling or creasing, with four small wrinkles visible on one (including on Palmer) and three wrinkles visible on the other (including on Ryan). The interior cards otherwise present as Near Mint. Two rare 36-card proof sheets from one of the most popular Topps test sets of the era. Dimensions: 23 x 29 inches. Total: 2 sheets. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $711
