1968 Topps "Wise Ties" Original Artwork Collection (11)
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,304
Collection of original artwork and an unopened pack from the 1968 Topps "Wise Ties" issue. The "Wise Ties" set is one of the most unusual sets ever issued by Topps. Twelve colorful ties made of thin plastic felt with an elastic neckband were designed with snarky sayings and marketed for kids to wear as an amusing gimmick. The offered collection features the original artwork for nine of the twelve ties along with an unopened pack, an artwork for the pack design, and an illustration which may have been intended for use on a display box or promotional material. This collection consists of original artworks for the following ties: #1 Get Lost, 2 You Make Me Sick!, 3 Shut Up!, 5 Homework Destroys Brain, 6 What'Cha Lookin' At, 9 You Turn Me On, 10 I Hate School, 11 I Love You, and 12 Kiss Me. Each illustration is done in black and white on thin artist's board ranging in size from 5-1/2 by 12-1/2 inches to 6-5/8 by 14-1/2 inches. Various pencil notations relating to production are visible on the fronts along with tape residue on the perimeter from display by the artists. A "Wise Ties" illustration on 5-3/4 by 11-3/8 inch artist's board is the text used on the front of the pack in which the ties were issued. The other artwork reads "Genuine Hand Painted Tie." The unopened pack contains one tie (#5 Homework Destroys Brain) and has a 1.25-inch rip extending from the left edge. This is a fascinating collection of original artwork from this unusual 1960s Topps nonsport set. Total: 11 artworks and one pack. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,304
