1963 Topps "Astronauts" Original Card Artwork Collection (24)

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $7,703

Tremendous collection of twenty-four pieces of original card artwork from the very popular 1963 Topps "Astronauts" series. Produced at the dawn of the space age, when every kid in America wanted to be an astronaut, this set of cards honoring those national heroes was Topps' response to this enthusiasm. The set features artworks based on NASA photographs of America's space explorers, their training exercises, and equipment. Presented are two dozen pieces of original artwork, each representing the front of one issued card from the 1963 Topps "Astronauts" set. This collection consists of the following: #1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 15, 17, 18, 19, 21, 23, 28, 31, 33, 34, 36, 39, 41, 42, 43, 46, 47, 48, and 50. Some of the most important cards in the set, including those featuring John Glenn, all the astronauts together, and President John F. Kennedy, are contained in this collection. Each of these traditional color flexichrome original artworks measures 3.5 x 5 inches. Overall condition is Excellent with approximately ten pieces displaying various condition flaws on the front, including light cracking, wrinkling, or small areas of paper loss or excess paper from improper storage. These technical flaws do not significantly detract from the overall eye-appeal and presentation of the original artworks. Each artwork has normal production-related remnants on the reverse, including heavy adhesive residue and handwritten card numbers. 1963 Topps "Astronaut" artworks are rarely seen. REA has offered only two original artwork examples from this set over the years. The artwork to card #54 was offered as Lot 1502 in 2005, selling for $1,044, and the artworks to two cards (# 5 and 45) were offered as a pair in Lot 1403 in 2006, selling for $844. This is a magnificent and very substantial collection of original artworks from one of the most historically significant nonsport sets ever issued. The entire set is comprised of only fifty-five cards, so this collection of twenty-four original artworks is particularly impressive. Total: 24 artworks. Reserve $2,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $7,703
