1950 Topps "License Plates" Original Card Artwork Collection (75)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,259
Collection of seventy-five original card-back artworks from the classic Topps "License Plates" set. Issued by Topps in 1950, the card fronts feature license plates from the forty-eight states, the District of Columbia, and the Canadian province of Quebec along with colorful depictions of popular car models and noteworthy landmarks on the card backs. The backs were partially obscured by a gray scratch-off coating which concealed the answer to a short question posed on the reverse. A total of 100 cards comprise the set. which was issued by Topps at the dawn of the 1950s when cars were becoming more of a staple of everyday life among the general public, leading to a culture of exploration as Americans took to the road in a number of fancy new models. This is the largest collection of original artwork from this series that we have ever seen, and three-quarters of the complete set is represented here in card-back artwork form. Each artwork measures approximately 1-5/8 by 2-3/4 inches and is rendered on thin artist's board. Two artworks have been cut down (the illustrated area is fully intact but some border has been removed) while eighteen artworks have been clipped at the corners (again, the illustrated area is completely unaffected). Each artwork is in overall Near Mint condition with some displaying light pencil notations in the border, consistent with use in the Topps proofing process, and normal production-related remnants on the reverses. Twenty-five artworks depict a specific car model while the remaining fifty picture landmarks, including the Washington Monument, Mount Rushmore, and Hollywood. This is an outstanding collection of very attractive original card-back artworks from this popular Topps nonsport novelty set, one of the earliest sets issued by the famous card manufacturer. Total: 75 artworks. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,259
