Circa 1958 Topps "Popeye Tattoos" One-Cent Display Box
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $296
Extremely rare display box from the "Popeye Tattoos" set issued in the late 1950s by Topps. Entirely folded down, the box measures approximately 6.5 by 7.75 inches and is in overall Very Good to Excellent condition. Light edge wear and scattered wrinkling on the front panel undoubtedly caused by its method of storage throughout the years as this particular box was not distributed in stores. Pencil notations on the back panel read "Topps File Copy/Return to Woody Gelman." Billed as a new series on the front panel, the colorfully illustrated box features a large portrait of Popeye along with the name "Popeye Tattoo Bubble Gum." Our research has not turned up another instance of this style box ever coming to market. A different style box, attributed to the 1958 Topps "Popeye Tattoo Transfer" set, was offered for sale in 2012. It is unknown if Topps scrapped the offered style in favor of the other box which is more appropriately themed with a tattooed Popeye alongside tattoo application instructions, or if the offered box relates to an unissued Topps set that never made it to production. Whatever the case may be, this is an outstanding nonsport collectible featuring a cultural icon that would make an excellent addition to any rare-box collection. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
