1868 Grant and Colfax Campaign Ferrotype Stickpin
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $474
Unusually large and rare style jugate ferrotype pinback dating from Ulysses S. Grant's 1868 presidential campaign. The pin features bust-length images of both Grant and his vice-presidential running mate, Schuyler Colfax, with the last name of each candidate printed directly above his respective image. Ferrotypes featuring both the presidential and vice-presidential candidates in a single image are usually considered especially desirable by political campaign collectors, and "bigger is usually better" when it comes to ferrotypes, both factors making this a particularly desirable 1868 campaign ferrotype. It is also an unusual style. The gold-colored circular platform (2.125 inches in diameter) features a patriotic display of thirteen tiny stars. Grant's image remains in Near Mint condition, while that of Colfax displays just a few minor surface emulsion bumps and is in Excellent condition. This is a choice ferrotype in outstanding condition, with just the most minor wear to the front and reverse of the pin. The original stickpin measures 1.25 inches and remains firmly affixed to the reverse. (Please note: anyone interested in political collectibles should consider joining the APIC. Contact REA for info.) This is an exceptional 1868 jugate ferrotype stickpin and one of the more unusual and desirable examples from the campaign. Excellent condition. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
