Government appointment, dated May 23, 1871, signed by Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885), eighteenth President of the United States. The document appoints David B. Emmert to be "Receiver of public moneys for the district of lands subject to sale at Humboldt Kansas." Signed by "U. S. Grant" as President of the United States and Columbus Delano as secretary of the interior. Grant's signature has been scripted in black ink, grading "9." The embossed seal of the Department of the Interior appears in the lower left corner. The document (18 x 13.5 inches) is moderately toned and displays a few small areas of light discoloration.
