1948-1949 and 1956 Topps "Golden Coin - It Happened To A President" Collection Including Unopened Box!

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,659

Extraordinary and remarkably comprehensive collection of materials from the rarely encountered "Golden Coin - It Happened To A President" set issued by Topps in 1948-1949 and then again exclusively in Canada in 1956. We would be surprised if this was not the finest collection of its type in the collecting world! This issue is actually a "two part" set: the first part is the gold plastic coins bearing the likenesses of U.S. Presidents that were issued with "Golden Coin Bubble Gum," and the second part of the set is the "It Happened To A President" illustrated true stories about experiences in the Presidents' lives that were printed on extremely thin paper stock and were issued affixed to "Golden Coin" wrappers. Presidents have long been a popular subject for card manufacturers, and these sets are just two of several issued by Topps alone throughout the years. The highlight of this collection may be what is, to the best of our knowledge, the only known complete unopened box of 1956 Topps "Golden Coin/It Happened To A President" packs in existence! This collection consists of the following: 1) 1948-1949 R711-5 "It Happened To A President" Near-Complete Set of Wrappers (19/20): Missing only #1 Jackson for completion. Each "Golden Coin Bubble Gum" wrapper has been flattened for display to 4-5/8 by 6-3/8 inches. Normal fold lines and wear against the paper-thin wrapper are visible. The "It Happened To A President" illustrations on the interior are clean and presentable. Overall Excellent condition. 2-3) Two 1948-1949 R711-5 "It Happened To A President" Partial Uncut Wrapper Sheets: Uncut strips of "Golden Coin Bubble Gum" wrappers measuring approximately 15-1/2 by 4-3/8 inches and each featuring parts of several "It Happened To A President" stories on the interior. One strip consists of a complete #4 and partial #9 and 14 stories. The other consists of complete #4 and 14 and partial #1 and 9. Extremely fragile in nature and presenting in very modest condition with tearing at the ends and vertical staining. 4-5) Two 1948-1949 R711-5 "Golden Coin President Series" Premium Albums with Coins: Premium albums measuring 3.5 by 9 inches designed to hold the thirty-two coins issued as part of the "Golden Coin President Series." Each album opens out in a trifold style and inside are slots corresponding to each President with his name and term printed underneath. The exterior front panel features a black and yellow illustration of the White House along with the name of the set. The back flap, which holds the album closed, bears three lines where the owner's personal information was designed to be written. On each album it was once filled out and has since been blacked out neatly in marker. One album contains all 32 coins while the other is missing only Buchanan. The original Bazooka Gum mailing envelope accompanies one album. Overall Excellent condition. 6) 1948-1949 R711-5 "Golden Coin Bubble Gum" Pack: Complete pack consisting of a "Golden Coin Bubble Gum" wrapper on the interior of which #11 in the "It Happened To A President" series is printed. Also included inside the pack is a single gold coin, a piece of gum, and a cardboard sleeve featuring an advertisement for Bazooka and the premium album. Very Good condition. Also included are two extra cardboard sleeves in Excellent and Fair condition. 7) 1948-1949 R711-5 "Golden Coin President Series" Collection of 147 Coins: Twenty-six different coins represented in varying quantities ranging from two to fifteen. Also included are two extremely rare U.S. Capitol coins, which have only recently become known by advanced collectors. There is no space for the coin within the premium album, but advertisements on the cardboard sleeve found within the pack do state that thirty-three coins comprise the set. Overall Excellent condition. 8) 1956 "It Happened To A President" Near-Complete Set of Wrappers (14/20): Missing #9, 11, 13, 15, 19, and 20 for completion. Each "Golden Coin Bubble Gum" wrapper has been flattened for display to 4-5/8 by 6-3/8 inches. Normal fold lines and wear against the paper-thin wrapper are visible. The "It Happened To A President" illustrations on the interior are clean and presentable and are distinguishable from the earlier issue by the 5-cent price on front and the bold red and black colors of the illustrations. Overall Excellent condition. 9) Complete Unopened 24-Pack 1956 "Golden Coin - It Happened To A President" Box: Extremely rare, and to this point entirely unique to the best of our knowledge. Complete five-cent display box containing 24 packs. Each pack consists of a “Golden Coin Bubble Gum" wrapper on the interior of which is printed an illustration from the "It Happened To A President" series, a single gold coin, a piece of gum, and a cardboard sleeve featuring an advertisement for Bazooka and the premium album. Each pack has maintained its bright colors and excellent display value and shows only minor shelf wear along the fragile exteriors. Overall Excellent condition. The display box is equally well preserved. The top die-cut portion is included but has become detached from the box. Otherwise, the box is in Excellent condition. This is a tremendous collection of important material relating to one of Topps' most infrequently seen early nonsport issues, highlighted by the inclusion of what we believe is a unique complete unopened box of twenty-four packs. This would make an extraordinary addition to any advanced nonsport collection and may very well be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire this outstanding rarity. Total: 33 wrappers, 2 uncut wrapper strips, 2 premium albums containing 63 coins, 147 extra coins, 1 complete 24-pack unopened box, and 1 extra pack. Reserve $400. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,659
