1887 Old Judge Store Advertising Poster
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,067
This colorful retail advertising display, which promotes Goodwin & Co.'s line of Old Judge Cigarettes and Smoking Tobacco, dates from 1887 and features a beautiful woman as its centerpiece. While we cannot state her identity with certainty, the woman bears a striking resemblance to Lillian Russell, who is considered by many to be the greatest actress of the nineteenth century, and whose image was featured on many insert insert cards issued by Goodwin & Co. The piece also dates from the same time as the company's famed N172 Old Judge tobacco-card set (1887-1890). All nineteenth-century Old Judge advertising posters are rare as they were not issued to the public, but were intended only for store display. In addition to the beautiful woman featured here, the poster also pictures colorful songbirds nesting in a flowering branch. This piece would have been a central point-of-sale advertising display in tobacco shops at the time, with both its size and colorful graphics sure to catch the eye of every patron in the store. The fact that it promotes Old Judge cigarettes makes it of special interest to both advertising and card collectors. An 1887 copyright date appears along the base, as does the name of the lithographer: "Giles Lith. Co. New York & Boston." The display (14 x 21 inches) has a number of minor edge tears/chips along both the right and left borders and a tiny pinhole along the base. A few moderate creases are also evident throughout. Complete with both its top and bottom metal runners, as well as its top hanging hook. While technically in Good to Very Good condition, the piece presents at a higher level and is ideal for display, as intended. Mounted and framed to total dimensions of 17 x 24 inches. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,067
