Circa 1889 Duke "Turkish Cross-Cut Cigarettes" N71 Tobacco Advertising Banner
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $593
Outstanding full-color display advertising poster for the N71 "Actors and Actresses (2nd Series)" set issued by W. Duke Sons & Co. in 1888. The caption along the top of the banner promotes the company's line of "Turkish Cross-Cut Cigarettes." While the set, as its name implies, features cards depicting actors and actresses, this particular banner is dedicated solely to the fairer sex and pictures seven lovely lasses. These tobacco banners were produced by tobacco companies for display in tobacco stores, to promote their particular brands and card issues. They are perhaps the most finely produced of all advertising displays relating to card collecting, and are considered by many to be the greatest prizes of all nineteenth-century tobacco-card collecting. This banner is unusual in its triangular design and is complete with its both its original metal runner and hanging hook along the top. The banner displays a five-inch horizontal tear (no paper loss; possibly restored) at the top extending inward from the right border, as well as a number of minor edge tears and a few light creases. In Very Good condition overall, but Excellent in its overall appearance. Dimensions: 13.5 inches wide and 20 inches long. Mounted and framed to total dimensions of 18 x 24. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $593
