1888 A38 Goodwin "Games and Sports" Album
Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,541
1888 A38 Goodwin & Co. Album featuring images of all fifty cards from the spectacularly colorful N165 "Games and Sports" series. This is by far the finest example of this tobacco album we have ever seen or offered. It is particularly impressive in such high grade! A variety of sports and activities are detailed throughout the N165 set, including four cards dedicated to the game of baseball, one card representing boxing, and one football. In the A38 album, illustrations of the cards are set against ornate background scenes, with one of the album's ten pages featuring a large and very elaborate baseball game-in-progress scene. The N165 series is one of the most beautiful and collectable of all pre-1900 tobacco issues, and it is not surprising that the corresponding A38 album is one of the most beautiful of all nineteenth-century tobacco premium albums. The A38 album is rarely seen, and this fact combined with the fact that the N165 set does not feature specific identified ballplayers and athletes (as do the other two Goodwin & Co. albums relating to baseball, the 1889 A35 "Round Album" and the 1888 A36 Goodwin "Champions" album) make it easy for even advanced collectors to overlook it and simply not be aware of the merits and extraordinary production values of the Goodwin "Games and Sports" album. Most collectors have never seen one. These rare premium albums could only be obtained by mail in exchange for coupons packed with Goodwin & Co. brand tobacco. Tightly bound with the original string, the album is in overall Excellent condition. A very light diagonal corner crease is present in the lower left corner throughout the album but does not detract in any way from the visual appeal. The pages are all clean, bright, and crisp without any visible toning or other flaws. The back page is also entirely clean with only a small, almost imperceptible area of surface flaking in the center which blends into the illustration and is only visible under close inspection. This is an extremely high-grade example of this overlooked nineteenth-century classic. Reserve $400. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,541
