1949 Leaf Football Promotional Poster

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $2,370

Presented is an outstanding display piece related to one of the most popular football-card series of all time: a 1949 Leaf Football promotional poster produced by the Leaf Gum Company and intended to sell merchants quantities of the upcoming football release for the 1949-1950 season. The offered poster originates directly from the Leaf archives and is an incredible look into the advertising conducted by the company in an effort to stock store shelves with its product. The reverse of this poster features two pencil notations used for company record keeping, listing the date the posters were mailed (10/28/49) and the quantity of posters that were printed (4600 pcs). Despite a somewhat large production, this is the first and only example of this rare poster that we have ever seen, let alone handled. Measuring 8-1/2 by 13-3/8 inches, the poster features striking imagery of a full wax box set against a collage of dozens of Leaf football cards. Five text boxes, including two in bold red print, punctuate the picture with product specifics and ordering information. Countless stars, including Sid Luckman and Sammy Baugh, are among those whose picture cards are used in the collage. The poster presents exceptionally well with no tears and with square corners. It has been folded neatly four times with fold lines visible on the reverse but not immediately apparent on the front. This method of storage undoubtedly contributed to its excellent preservation throughout the years. Truly a remarkable piece of promotional material relating to an iconic football-card issue that would make an excellent companion piece to any Leaf football-card collection. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,370
