1911 T205 Gold Border Ty Cobb PSA NM 7

Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $14,220

Graded NM 7 by PSA. Classic Ty Cobb card from the T205 Gold Border set, one of the most popular of all 1910-era tobacco issues, in exceptionally high grade for this issue. This is a stunning high-grade example of one of card collecting's most classic cards, from what is perhaps card collecting's single most condition-sensitive issue. The card displays almost imperceptible hints of white at the tips of the corners and a small sliver of a gold border surface chip along the right edge. This card has bold, striking colors, and excellent centering (very slightly to the bottom). The Piedmont advertising on back is boldly printed and centered to the bottom. Near Mint is a tremendous grade for T205 Gold Borders. This card is one of only seven examples graded at this impressive level with just three graded higher (all NM-MT 8) out of a total of 477 T205 Cobb examples recorded in the PSA Population Report. In fact, less than four percent of the graded population of all subjects recorded by PSA have reached or exceeded the NM 7 level which makes this example of Ty Cobb, one of the key cards to the T205 set, even more impressive. Remember, there is only one Cobb in the T205 set (as opposed to four poses in the T206 set), and a grade of NM in T205 is statistically far more significant in the extremely condition-sensitive T205 set than in T206, even without reference to the fact that T205s are much rarer than T206s. Prices of all high-grade T205s are just beginning to reflect the condition-sensitivity of the set, with the market now literally valuing T205s on a different scale than tobacco cards from other sets. As of this writing, only ten T205 Cobbs have been graded NM or better by PSA (three PSA 8 and seven PSA 7). At the same time, 167 T206 White Border Cobbs have graded NM or better by PSA (three 9s, four 8.5s, fifty-three 8s, two 7.5, and 105 NM 7s). Numbers don't lie. This card is a serious condition rarity. SMR value is $17,500. This is an exceptionally outstanding high-grade example of Ty Cobb, the key card in the T205 Gold Border set. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+. SOLD FOR $14,220
