1936 Babe Ruth Signed Check Payable to Claire Ruth
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $3,258.75
Babe Ruth personal checks have long been a favorite of autograph collectors due to their inherent authenticity and the fact that Ruth’s signature is always well executed. The offered example is further distinguished by the fact that it is made out in Ruth’s hand payable to his wife, Claire Ruth. Thus, the check features two “Ruth” signatures. The check, dated September 24, 1936, and drawn on the Chemical Bank & Trust Company of New York, is made out to “Claire Ruth” in the amount of $500 and boldly signed “G. H. Ruth” in blue fountain pen (grading “9/10”). The second "Ruth” signature, which appears in the name "Claire Ruth," is equally well rendered, grading “9/10.” Ruth’s preprinted name appears along the left margin. Ideally, Claire has endorsed the check on the reverse in green ink ("9"). Many years ago several hundred Ruth checks originating from the family appeared on the market all at once. These have long since been absorbed and now Ruth checks are increasingly difficult to find. This is an outstanding Ruth check in all respects, and all the more desirable for the fact that it is made out to his wife. The check (8.5 x 3.25 inches) displays normal bank cancellation stamps and holes (one stamp touches upon the "h" in Ruth's main signature along the base), a slight vertical fold, and three staple holes. In Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $3,258.75
