Babe Ruth Milestone Home Run Signature Display (Pitchers HR #1, #500, and #714)
Starting Bid - $100.00, Sold For - $414.75
This attractive framed wall display features the signatures of three pitchers who, if not for one fateful pitch, would probably be unknown to most baseball fans. Each of the pitchers represented here, Jack Warhop, Willis Hudlin, and Guy Bush, served up a milestone home run to Babe Ruth. Ruth's first career homer came at the expense of Yankees pitcher Jack Warhop on May 5, 1915, at the Polo Grounds. (Warhop also gave up Ruth's second career home run later that season.) Fourteen years later Ruth tagged Indians pitcher Willis Hudlin for his 500th home run on August 11, 1929, at Cleveland's League Park. Ruth's final home run, the 714th of his career, was served up by Pirates pitcher Guy Bush on May 25, 1935, at Forbes Field. Warhop's signature, which is the most elusive of the trio (he died in 1960), has been scripted in blue fountain pen on a lined blue index card, while those of Hudlin (died 2002) and Bush (died 1985) appear on unlined white index cards. All of the signatures have been boldly scripted and grade "10." The cards are in Near Mint condition. Matted above each card is an 8 x 10 photo of Ruth, showing him as a member of the club he was affiliated with at the time of the corresponding home run: the Red Sox, the Yankees, and the Braves. Total dimensions: 27 x 19 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $100. Estimate $200/$400. SOLD FOR $414.75
