1947 Pittsburgh Pirates Team-Signed Ball with Honus Wagner and Hank Greenberg
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,540.50
Official National League (Frick) ball signed in blue fountain pen by twenty-six members of the 1947 Pittsburgh Pirates, including Wagner (coach, sweet spot, "6," with some smudging to the "o" in "Honus"), Greenberg, Herman, Kiner, Westlake, Cox, Jarvis, Klutz, Singleton, Bonham, Heintzelman, Bahr, Ostermueller, Basinski, Roe, Bagby, and Russell. As noted by an additional blue-ink notation on a side panel that reads "Miami Fla 1947," this ball was signed in spring training and includes a number of players, such as John Lanning, who did not make the club that year. Signatures range from "2" to "6," averaging "5." 1947 marked both Hank Greenberg's first and final season with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He had planned to retire after the 1946 season but he was lured to Pittsburgh by management's offer to make him the first $100,000 salaried player in the National League. While he managed to hit 25 home runs that season, Greenberg's larger contribution was as mentor to a young Ralph Kiner, whom he helped groom into the National League's next great slugger. The ball is moderately toned, with one panel displaying a large, dark blemish. In Very Good condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $1,540.50
