1943 and 1945 Detroit Tigers Team-Signed Balls (2)
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $474.00
Each of these two Detroit Tigers team balls was obtained by our consignor's grandfather, who was good friends with former Tigers pitcher Eldon Auker. Although Auker retired in 1939, he obviously still had close ties with the Tigers and was able to obtain these balls for his friend (Auker even added his signature to the 1943 ball). They have been in our consignor's family since the day they were signed! The highlight, of course, is a team-signed ball from the Tigers' 1945 World Championship season. The official American League (Harridge) ball is signed in black fountain pen by twenty-six team members, including Greenberg, Newhouser (clubhouse signature), O'Neill (Mgr., ss), Overmire (ss), Webb, York, Bridges, Eaton, Kems, Cramer, Benton, Mayo (twice), Outlaw, Mueller (clubhouse signature), Tobin (clubhouse signature), Hoover, Swift (on ball label), Trout, Hostetler, Cullenbine, and Miller. Signatures range from "1" to "7," averaging "4/5." The ball is moderately toned, with a number of light abrasions. In Goo d to Very Good condition. The remaining ball appears to date from spring training in 1943, as it displays the signatures of one or two players that did not make the final roster that season. The official American League (Harridge) ball is signed in black fountain pen by fifteen team members, including Wakefield (ss), Trout, Hoover, Bloodworth, Higgins, White, York, Richards, Auker, Cramer, Harris, Overmire, and Gentry. The ball is moderately soiled, with a few minor abrasions. In Good to Very Good condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $474.00
