Hall of Fame 3 x 5 Signature Collection (5) - All Obtained by Keith Sutton - Founding Member of SABR

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,185.00

Collection of five Hall of Fame signatures, each individually scripted on a 3 x 5-inch card, matted and framed together with the player's respective T206 tobacco card. The players represented here are Roderick Wallace, Fred Clarke, Ed Walsh, Rube Marquard, and Sam Crawford. Also included is 3 x 5-inch card signed by Fred Parent, which has been matted and framed in a similar manner to the other five. The signatures, penned in a variety of inks, all grade "9" or "10," with the exception of Parent ("6/7"). Each of these signatures and cards has the special provenance of originating from the personal collection of Keith Sutton, who was one of the founding members of SABR (Society for American Baseball Research). (A number of Sutton's other personal souvenirs, including cards, programs, and autographs, are offered as separate lots elsewhere in this auction.) Sutton, whose biography can be viewed on the SABR website (http://sabr.org/content/sabr-salute-keith-sutton), amassed a large and varied collection during his lifetime, including autographs. Like most early collectors, Sutton found that the easiest way to obtain autographs of former players was to simply write them and ask for their signature. Normally, the inclusion of a self-addressed stamped envelope was all it took to receive a response. In order to maintain a proper filing system, Sutton kept copies of all the letters he sent to the players and also the return envelope, which he then paired and saved. Offered with this collection are copies of Sutton's original letters to both Clarke (dated 11/10/53) and Wallace (dated 1/13/55), as well as the return envelopes. Wallace not only complied, but also sent Sutton an additional handwritten note on a 3 x 5-inch card that reads "Thank you Keith and I hope you have all good luck with your autograph collection. Sincerely, R. J. 'Bob' Wallace." Both the text and Wallace's signature grade "10." The 3 x 5-inch cards are all in apparent Near Mint condition, while the T206 cards are in Good to Very Good condition overall (most likely mounted by means of adhesive). It should be noted that while all of these items were obtained from Keith Sutton's family, Sutton did not frame them together. The framing was done by the gentleman who originally purchased them from the Sutton family. Each frame measures approximately 6.75 x 9 inches. Total: six framed displays (signature and T206 card), plus Roderick Wallace handwritten note and additional copy letters and return envelopes. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,185.00
