Large Circa 1940s Cut-Signature Collection with Many Hall of Famers, Including Cobb, Young, Wagner, Alexander, and Speaker (50)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $5,925.00
This very substantial collection of fifty cut signatures, all of which were obtained in the 1940s, is highlighted by twenty-nine Hall of Famers (representing twenty-six different players). All of the signatures offered here are cuts in the truest sense of the word, as each has been neatly excised from various items, including vintage autograph-album pages, letters, and postcards. Unless otherwise noted, all of the signatures are scripted in fountain pen (blue or black) and grade either "9" or "10." Many of the signatures are prefaced by a greeting or salutation, but none are personalized. The cuts, which are all irregular in their dimensions, range in size from approximately 2 x 1 to 5.5 x 4.5 inches, averaging 3 x 2 inches. The number of cuts for each listed player, if more than one, appears in parenthesis. Hall of Fame Cuts (29): Alexander (2), Baker, Bender, Cobb, Collins, Cronin (grading "7"), DiMaggio, Doerr, Duffy, Frisch, Gehringer, Greenberg, Grove, Heilmann, Hoyt (3), Hubbell, Lindstrom, Ott, Pennock, Rizzuto, Roberts, Schoendienst, Spahn, Speaker, Wagner, and Young. Non-Hall of Fame Cuts (21): Bill Bevens, Ralph Branca, Spud Chandler, Jack Coombs, Joe Dobson, Bruce Edwards, Charlie Keller, Mark Koenig, Harvey Kuenn, Duffy Lewis, Pepper Martin, Wilcy Moore (2), Lefty O'Doul, Joe Page, Aaron Robinson, Bob Shawkey (2), Spec Shea, Dick Siebert, and George Stirnweiss. Also included is a larger cut featuring the following seven Cardinals signatures: Johnny Mize, Willard Marshall, Walker Cooper, Bill Rigney, Dave Koslo, Jack Conway, and Bob Thompson. A few of the cuts bear fold lines, otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition overall. The great visual appeal of the cuts, and the many quality Hall of Famers included, may make this collection ideal in part or whole for encapsulation and individual sale. Total: 50 cut signatures. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500++. SOLD FOR $5,925.00
