1934 New York Giants Team-Signed Ball with Mel Ott and Three Other Hall of Famers

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $592.50

Red-and-black stitched "Official League Ball" signed in blue and black fountain pen by the following twenty-six members of the 1934 New York Giants: Ott (sweet spot, signed Melvin Ott), Terry (player/manager), Hubbell, Jackson, Schumacher (sweet spot), Schaeffer (sweet spot; trainer), Fitzsimmons, Critz, Bell, Vergez, Watkins, Parmelee, Luque, Castleman, Salveson, Ryan, Leiber, Thompson, Mancuso, Richards, Grantham, Moore, Peel, Snyder (coach), Clarke (coach), and Healy (Healy, who was with the Giants from 1930-1932, never played a game with the club in 1934, but he did appear in fifteen games with the Cardinals that season after the Giants sold his contract to St. Louis on May 4th). The fact that Healy is on this ball indicates that it was most likely signed during spring training of 1934. Although there is no manufacturer's name on the ball, the name "Louisville" is stamped on the panel above the ball label, suggesting that this might be a minor-league ball that was produced for the Louisville Colonels of the American Association. If so, perhaps this ball was signed at an exhibition game between the Giants and Louisville as the club made its way north following spring training. The signatures range from "2" to "6," averaging "4/5." The ball is lightly toned and displays a small area of light discoloration on a side panel. All of the manufacturer's labels remain bright and legible. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Disclosure per section 13 of REA's terms and conditions: This lot has been consigned from the personal collection of an executive or employee of Robert Edward Auctions (or a relative of an executive or employee). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $592.50
