1948 Babe Ruth Autographed Photo

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,251.50

Large-format matte-finish photo, signed by Babe Ruth. The photo captures Ruth (dressed in his familiar camel-hair coat and hat) smoking a cigar while seated in the stands at Yankee Stadium. He has signed the photo "Babe Ruth" in black fountain pen in the lower left corner, with the signature grading "8/9." Below Ruth's signature is the printed notation (not in Ruth's hand) "March 14, 1948/Plant Field." In addition to Ruth's signature, the photo has also been inscribed and signed in black fountain pen by a second, unidentified person, who writes "Husky/It was a Tampa cigar/that did it." The signature is illegible, but he or she has added the date "Feb 12, 1948" below the inscription. Plant Field was the first major athletic venue in Tampa, Florida, and was also home to the Florida State Fair for many years. Our consignor's father worked for the Florida Parks Department, but she does not have any specific additional knowledge regarding the history of this family keepsake. Plant Field was the spring-training home to the Cincinnati Reds in the 1940s and it can probably be assumed that our consignor's father obtained Ruth's signature on this photo there in 1948, as noted below his name. It is interesting to note that the date of the additional inscription and signature precedes the date below Ruth's name. Regardless of the precise story of its history, which has been lost to time, it remains an outstanding Ruth signed photo dating from the final year of his life. The photo (11 x 14 inches) displays a rough right border, as well as a number of small edge and corner tears. In Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,500+. SOLD FOR $2,251.50
