1929 R316 Kashin Publications Babe Ruth - Boldly Signed by Ruth!

Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $16,590.00

Signed example of Babe Ruth's 1929 R316 Kashin Publications card. Ruth's signature, which is flawlessly scripted in black fountain pen on the front (grading "10"), is remarkably bold and contrasts beautifully against the white background of his uniform leg. While Ruth-signed baseball cards are not unheard of, all are extremely rare, and most of the known examples are from other issues. This is only the second R316 signed Babe Ruth card we have ever seen. The first appeared as Lot 994 in our May 2010 auction, where it sold for $8,225. The card itself is also of note. Ruth is the key card from the R316 set and as such represents a valuable item in its own right. Although a thin strip of mounting tape and some surface paper loss on the blank reverse (resulting from its removal from an album) would prohibit the card from receiving a technically high grade, from the front the card displays as Excellent to Mint. The particularly extraordinary signature, as previously noted, is essentially perfect ("10"). This is an exceptional Ruth signed item in all respects and one of the most unusual issues of the few signed Ruth baseball cards we have seen or offered over the years. Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $16,590.00
