1888 E223 G & B Chewing Gum Timothy Keefe Portrait PSA NM-MT 8

Starting Bid - $5,000.00, Sold For - $23,700.00

Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA. Extraordinary high-grade example of Hall of Famer Timothy Keefe from the E223 G & B Chewing Gum series. This is a magnificent card! It is the highest-graded E223 of any subject on record (between the combined population reports of both PSA and SGC). This is the only Keefe graded at this level with a single SGC EX 60 as the next closest example. G & Bs are one of the most distinctive of all pre-1900 baseball-card issues due to their small size (1 x 2.25 inches) and the fact that they were issued with gum as opposed to tobacco. They are also one of the rarest of all nineteenth-century issues. This example of Keefe is a photographic portrait variety, which is the most desirable type in the eyes of most collectors (G & Bs were also issued featuring woodcut "line drawing" illustrations). The card is spectacularly bright and clean, both front and back, with outstanding contrast, strong corners, and an exceptionally strong overall visual appeal. This is a truly impressive sample of a very significant Hall of Famer from E223 G & B Chewing Gum, one of collecting's rarest and most highly regarded nineteenth-century card issues. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000++.
