1939 Honus Wagner Signed First-Day Cover
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $711.00
1939 Centennial of Baseball first-day cover signed by Honus Wagner, Charles "Deacon" Phillippe, and Mel Queen. The cover, which celebrates the 100th anniversary of baseball, features a small affixed photo of Wagner, below which is a brief biography of the legendary "Flying Dutchman." All of the signatures have been scripted in black fountain pen, with Wagner's grading "9/10" and Phillippe's grading "9." The Mel Queen signature has been inexplicably crossed out in black ink. The fact that Mel Queen's signature appears on this first-day cover probably indicates that the signatures were obtained after 1939. Both Honus Wagner and star pitcher Deacon Phillippe were teammates on the Pirates from 1899 through 1911 (the franchise was in Louisville in 1899), but Queen played much later. Queen joined the Pirates in 1947 and remained with the club through 1952. Wagner was a coach with the Pirates from 1933 through 1951. If we assume that the signatures were obtained at the same time, it most likely happened sometime between the years 1947 and 1951 (Phillippe passed away in 1952). The cover (6.5 x 3.75 inches) remains in Excellent condition. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, with each of the signatures designated "Authentic." Additional LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $711.00
