John Grabowski Signed (Endorsed) 1927 New York Yankees Payroll Check - Issued on the Date of Ruth's 60th Home Run!
Starting Bid - $100.00, Sold For - $1,659.00
1927 New York Yankees payroll check, issued to and endorsed by Johnny Grabowski, on the day Babe Ruth hit his 60th home run. The check, dated September 30, 1927, is issued to "John Grabowski" in the amount of "$518.31" and has been signed in black fountain pen along the base by team owner "Jacob Ruppert" (grading "10") and countersigned on the left border by general manager "E. G. Barrow" ("10"). Grabowski has endorsed the check "John Grabowski" on the reverse in black fountain pen ("9"). The typed notation on the reverse reads "Balance of salary in full payment of season 1927." This check was issued to Grabowski on the second-to-last day of the 1927 season, which was highlighted by Babe Ruth's record 60th home run off of Washington Senators pitcher Tom Zachary at Yankee Stadium. Amazingly, our consignor purchased this check along with a Joe Giard endorsed 1927 New York Yankees payroll check (which appears as a separate lot in this auction) at a small country auction house located in Northhampton, Massachusetts. Coincidentally, or perhaps not, Northampton is only twenty-five miles from Ware, Massachusetts, where both Giard and Grabowski were born. The check (9 x 3.25 inches), which has normal bank cancellation stamps and holes, displays two vertical folds (one heavy, one light) and is otherwise in Excellent condition. It should be noted that a few of the cancellation holes touch upon the Grabowski signature. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $100. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $1,659.00
