Circa 1928 Ford Frick Signed Large-Format Photo of Frick and Ruth

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $474.00

Large-format photo (11 x 13.5 inches), circa 1928, of Ford Frick and Babe Ruth posing together on the field, signed by former National League president (1935-1951) and Baseball Commissioner (1951-1965) Ford Frick. Frick has inscribed the photo in blue fountain pen (grading "9/10") atop his image "Best Wishes/to Allen Snyder/from/Ford Frick." This is a fascinating, unique, and particularly early Ford Frick signed photo, dating from his days as a sportswriter and "ghostwriter" for Babe Ruth. It is also notable for both its size and the fact that we do not believe this image has ever been seen in print before. While we do not know exactly where or when the photo was taken, the road uniform style worn by Ruth here was only used by the Yankees for the short four-year period 1927-1930. Frick, who began his career as a sportswriter, had a long and close association with Ruth, and ghost wrote many of Ruth's syndicated newspaper columns during the 1920s and 1930s. Years later his close friendship with Ruth was cited by many of Ford's critics for his controversial ruling in 1961 that prevented Maris from officially breaking Ruth's long-standing single-season home-run record (Frick ruled that for the record to be officially broken, it would have be accomplished in the first 154 games of the season). The photo, which appears to be a vintage second-generation print, has been mounted onto a cardboard backing. In turn, both the photo and cardboard mount have been matted over, with the matting (13.25 x 16.75 inches) having been affixed directly to the white borders of the photo, leaving just the central image area visible. A portion of the matting has been lifted off the photo along the top right corner, resulting in both surface paper and adhesive residue on the photo's white borders. The central image area remains in Excellent to Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $474.00
