1928 Ty Cobb: The Idol of Baseball Fandom Signed First Edition

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $3,555.00

First edition of Ty Cobb: The Idol of Baseball Fandom, by Sverre O. Braathen, inscribed by Ty Cobb on the interior. Published by the Avondale Press, New York, 1928. Cobb has inscribed the book in black fountain pen on the front flyleaf: "To John B. Sheridan/'In sincere friendship'/Ty Cobb/July-30-28." Both the text and signature are boldly scripted, grading "10." John B. Sheridan was a St. Louis sportswriter and frequent contributor to the The Sporting News. Not surprisingly, a check of the schedule shows that the Philadelphia Athletics visited Sportsman's Park on July 30, 1928, to take on the St. Louis Browns. Obviously, Sheridan took the opportunity to have Cobb sign his volume for him or was presented with this signed volume as a gift by Cobb on that day. Cobb was in his final season in 1928. While Cobb did not appear in the July 30th game against the Browns, it was not for lack of talent. Even at the age of forty-two, Cobb managed to hit .323 for the A's that year, making it a record twenty-three consecutive seasons in which he batted .300 or better. The 268-page hardcover book (5.5 x 8.25 inches) displays little wear and remains in Near Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $3,555.00
