1895 N300 Mayo's Cut Plug Cap Anson

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,370.00

Graded GOOD 30 by SGC. N300 Mayo's Cut Plug of Hall of Famer Cap Anson. This is a particularly significant nineteenth-century card as Mayo's Cut Plug is one of the very few sets featuring Cap Anson from his playing days. While he was the premier player of his day, for some reason Anson is represented by only two poses in the N172 Old Judge series (and one of those, of course, is the incredibly rare "Anson in uniform" pose, of which there are only several known examples). Bright and crisp, with no major creases (a couple extremely light surface wrinkles visible on the reverse), and with light wear to the extremely condition-sensitive edges and corners. Close examination (a magnifying glass is required) reveals the slightest hint of purple ink on two letters of the "Mayo's Cut Plug" insignia in the lower left corner and a very small, insignificant area of clear glue residue on the reverse, both of which are responsible for the extremely conservative SGC grade. This card has a Vg-Ex appearance. This is an outstanding mid-grade example of one of Cap Anson's most desirable cards. The equivalent SMR value is $2,650. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000.
