1914 Signed First Edition of Busting 'Em by Ty Cobb

Starting Bid - $2,500.00, Sold For - $4,740.00

Busting 'Em by Ty Cobb, signed by Cobb on the interior. First edition published by Edward J. Clode, New York, 1914. Cobb has beautifully signed the book in his customary green ink (grading "10") on the leaf opposite the title page. This was Cobb's first published book and offered fans their first glimpse into the mind of baseball's greatest player. It should be noted that signed examples of this book (which is rare by itself) are virtually nonexistent. In fact, this volume represents only the second signed example we have ever seen, making it one of the most desirable Ty Cobb signed pieces in the hobby. This signed edition was purchased at auction by our consignor in 2001 for $6,196 and has remained in his possession since that time. (Another signed copy of this classic first edition sold in the 1999 Barry Halper sale for $17,250.) The 282-page hardcover book displays the name of a former owner written in black fountain pen on the front fly leaf: "Marshall Boone/5-13-16/Balt. Md." The book (5 x 7.25 inches) displays moderate wear, including foxing along the spine. The pages are generally clean and free of any significant flaws. In Very Good condition overall. The book is housed in a custom-made solander case for optimal display and preservation. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $4,740.00
