1918 Honus Wagner Signed Check
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,777.50
Bank check, dated November 4, 1918, signed by Honus Wagner. The check, made out to "Carnegie Union" in the amount of $1.75, is drawn on the Carnegie National Bank of Carnegie, Pennsylvania, and is signed “John H. Wagner” along the base. Wagner’s signature has been scripted in black fountain pen and grades “7/8.” Autograph collectors have always placed a special premium on checks due to their inherent authenticity. The offered Wagner check is an extremely early example and dates just one year after his retirement from baseball. Wagner checks are far rarer than Cobb or even Ruth checks, with just a small number discovered and released by the family in relatively recent years. Decades ago, Cobb and Ruth checks were available in far greater quantities, literally by the hundreds, and they have been easily absorbed by the marketplace, suggesting a very bright future in the years to come for the few Wagner checks circulating. The check (8.5 x 3 inches), which is moderately toned, displays a vertical fold, a few very small, light creases, and a tiny vertical tear along the base. Standard bank cancellation stamps appear on both the front and reverse, some of which touch upon the signature. In Very Good condition. Mounted (by means of photo corners) and framed together with a recent print (7 x 9 inches) of Wagner, picturing him during his playing days with the Pirates. Total dimensions: 15.5 x 21 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,777.50
