1911 Hughie Jennings Cut Signature
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $3,851.25
Cut signature of Hall of Fame shortstop and manager Hughie Jennings (1869-1928). The small 3.5 x 1.5-inch cut is inscribed by Jennings in pencil (grading "8"), "Hugh Jennings/Detroit B.B. Club." The year, "1911" (written in an unknown hand), appears in black fountain pen along the left border. Jennings' signature is among the rarest of all Hall of Fame players due to his untimely death in 1928 at the age of fifty-nine, which, of course, was well before the establishment of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936 (Jennings was inducted in 1945). Jennings signature alone, on a document, photo, or cut, is the exception rather than the rule, as most examples today are found on 1920s New York Giants team-signed balls (which are also scarce). This is an outstanding Jennings signature dating from his tenure as manager of the Detroit Tigers. The cut, which appears to be the reverse of a membership card (as noted by the partial printing and member signature on the reverse) displays both surface paper loss and paper residue on the reverse as a result of having been removed from an album. In Excellent condition overall. Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $3,851.25
