1887 N172 Old Judge Hank O'Day - Newly Elected Hall of Famer!
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,422.00
Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. 1887 N172 Old Judge of one of the newest Hall of Famer members (elected by the Veterans Committee in December 2012), Hank O'Day (#355-3 pose), with the Washington Nationals. O'Day pitched parts of seven seasons for teams in the American Association, National League, and Players' League before embarking on a lengthy and noteworthy career as an umpire with nearly 4,000 games to his credit. He made the decisive call in the famous "Merkle's Boner" game, ruling Fred Merkle of the Giants missed second base as he scored the apparent game-winning run, which led to the Cubs winning the pennant and ultimately the 1908 World Series. As can easily be seen, this example displays much better than suggested by its technical SGC grade! It appears Vg-Ex on the front with light wear to the corners, a tremendous image, and a slight tilt to the photo. On the reverse, the number "78" has been lightly penciled into the top left corner, accounting for the lower grade. Vertical wrinkling is visible throughout the back but does not break through to the front. This is a very attractive N172 Hall of Famer with particularly outstanding contrast and photo quality. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,422.00
