1954 Hunter Wieners Collection (14)
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $2,370.00
Addendum: In the printed catalog, we misidentified Rip Repulski as Eddie Stanky. This is corrected below.
Rarely offered collection of fourteen cards from the 1954 Hunter Wieners set highlighted by two examples of Hall of Famer Enos Slaughter. This regionally issued set features exclusively St. Louis Cardinals players. The 1954 Hunter Wieners set was issued in two-card panels on each pack of Hunter hot dogs. Instead of two player cards per pack like the set issued in the prior year, the company inserted one front (featuring the player image but no name) and one back (featuring only statistics against two cartoon Cardinals) onto the package and challenged consumers to identify the player based on his picture and the statistics. This collection includes seven fronts and seven backs (which were often discarded in favor of keeping only the colorful player portraits). These cards originate from the childhood collection of our consignor, who diligently saved these cards in the year of issue. Condition has always been a problem with these cards due to their method of issue. Technically, the cards range from Fr to Vg-Ex without reference to the hand-cutting. Included are the following: Fronts: Alston, Haddix, Lowrey, Riddle, two Slaughter (Vg-Ex and Gd), and Rip Repulski. Backs: Miller, Presko, Rice, Riddle, Schoendienst, and two Stanky. An impressive, original-owner collection of cards from this classic 1950s regional food issue. Total: 14 cards (7 fronts and 7 backs). Reserve $200. Estimate $500+.
