1954 and 1955 Red Man Tobacco Collection with Tabs (258 Assorted with 88 HOFers!)
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,014.50
Presented is a collection of 258 Red Man Tobacco cards from 1954 and 1955, each with the original tab intact, and including an amazing eighty-eight Hall of Famers. These cards were part of an original-owner collection that contained over 750 Red Man Tobacco cards (the complete sets and other duplicates are offered elsewhere in this auction). We don't know how our consignor, who was 11 and 12 years old, respectively, when these sets were issued, acquired so many of these cards, which were issued one per pouch of Red Man Tobacco. 1) 1954 Red Man Tobacco Near-Complete Set (50/51 plus 130 duplicates for a total of 180 cards): Missing only #6N Kluszewski for completion and providing the foundation for several other near-complete sets missing only a few cards. Overall condition is 55% ranging from Vg to Ex and 45% Pr to Gd. Keys: Two #1N Ashburn (Vg-Ex and Vg), 3A Fox (Pr), two 4A Kell/Boston (both Pr), 4A Kell/Chicago (Fr), two 5N Irvin (Gd and Pr), four 10N Schoendienst (two Gd and two Pr), ten 11N Spahn (two Vg, three Gd, and five Pr), two 13N Campanella (Vg-Ex and Vg), two 15N Reese (Gd and Fr), eight 16A Ford (three Vg-Ex and five Fr), four 16N Snider (Vg and three Gd), five 17A Rizzuto (Ex, Vg-Ex, and three Fr/Gd), seven 18N Roberts (Ex, four Vg, and two Gd), two 19N Slaughter (Vg and Fr), five 20A Berra (Ex-Mt, Ex, and three Pr/Fr), four 21A Lemon (two Vg, Fr, and Pr), five 22N Hodges (two Ex, two Vg, and Gd), 23N Mathews (Vg), and 25N Mays (Gd). 2) 1955 Red Man Tobacco Near-Complete Set (40/50 plus 38 duplicates for a total of 78 cards): Missing ten cards for completion (#2N, 3A Ford, 6N, 11N, 13N, 16N, 17A, 19N Snider, 21N, and 23N). Overall condition is 45% Vg-Ex to Ex, 34% Gd to Vg, and 21% Pr to Fr. Keys: #1N Ashburn (Vg-Ex), 3N Hodges (Vg-Ex), 4A Fox (Vg-Ex), 7N Mays (Pr), 8A Lemon (Vg), two 10N Spahn (both Pr), four 12N Wilhelm (two Ex, Vg-Ex, and Vg), 14A Wynn (Pr), two 16A Berra (Vg and Gd), 17N Reese (Vg), two 18A Doby (Vg-Ex and Vg), and three 18N Schoendienst (two Vg-Ex and Vg). Red Man Tobacco cards are far rarer than most 1950s baseball cards. Because of their tabs (which were designed to be hand-cut and redeemed for prizes) and method of issue, they often have condition problems. We consider Red Mans to represent one of the best values of all cards from the era. They are very substantial, colorful, interesting, and much rarer than bubble-gum cards of the era, yet are valued very modestly compared to most other issues of the early 1950s. This is an extremely large and very attractive collection of these unusual cards. Total: 258 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $2,014.50
