1949 to 1955 Bowman Original Owner Collection (838) Including Two Mantles, Mays Rookie, Williams, Robinson
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $4,147.50
Presented is a tremendous collection of 838 Bowman cards, spanning the years 1949 to 1955, containing dozens of stars and Hall of Famers, highlighted by 1953 Bowman Color and 1955 Bowman Mickey Mantle cards and a 1951 Bowman Willie Mays rookie card. This collection consists of the duplicates of a large original-owner collection consigned to this auction. The consignor was an industrious and extremely enthusiastic collector as a youngster who did not stop once he finished a set (at least two dozen of which appear elsewhere in this auction). After sorting his collection, we were left with nearly 2,500 duplicates which we have made available in a number of smaller lots grouped by manufacturer. Our consignor had one card in this collection graded by SGC years ago. 1) 1949 Bowman (4 cards): All Pr. #38, 56, 57, and 58. 2) 1950 Bowman (190 cards): Ninety-nine different cards presenting mostly Ex to Ex-Mt but each has tape remnants in the top two corners from past mounting. Keys: #6 Feller, 11 Rizzuto, 19 Spahn, 21 Reese, 22 Robinson, 32 Roberts, 46 Berra, 71 Schoendienst, 75 Campanella RC, 77 Snider RC, 84 Ashburn, 112 Hodges RC, 139 Mize, 217 Stengel, and 220 Durocher. Of the remaining ninety-one (sixty-seven different) cards without tape, fourteen grade Vg-Ex (including #75 Campanella RC) and seventy-seven grade Pr to Gd (including #19 Spahn, 35 Slaughter, 39 Doby, 71 Schoendienst, and 148 Wynn). 3) 1951 Bowman (104 cards): Includes seventy-nine different. Condition is 75% Vg-Ex to Ex and 25% Vg or lesser (mostly Fr). Keys: #3 Roberts (Vg-Ex), 7 Hodges (Ex), 53 Lemon (Vg+), 165 Williams (Pr), 232 Fox RC (Ex-Mt), 233 Durocher (Fr), and 305 Mays RC (Pr). 4) 1952 Bowman (134 cards): Includes sixty-eight different. Condition is 50% Vg-Ex to Ex and 50% Pr to Gd (many cards have a pinhole but present better). Condition is 47% Vg to Ex (averaging Vg-Ex) and 53% lesser (mostly Fr due to pinholes but presenting Vg to Ex). Keys: #32 Musial (Ex), 46 Campanella (SGC NM+ 86, this is an old grade and may be more accurately EX/NM+), 59 Mantle (Fr), two 99 Spahn (Vg+ and Pr), 118 Martin (Fr), 121 Berra (Vg), and 153 Ford (Vg-Ex). 6) 1954 Bowman (60 cards): Includes fifty-one different. Keys: #1 Rizzuto (Pr), 6 Fox (Ex), two 50 Kell (Vg-Ex+ and Vg), 57 Wilhelm (Ex+), 164 Wynn (Ex), and 177 Ford (no top border, otherwise Ex). 7) 1955 Bowman (248 cards): Includes 121 different. Condition is 80% Vg-Ex to Ex (with a few better) and 20% lesser (mostly downgraded due to writing). Keys: Three #23 Kaline (Ex+, Ex, and Vg-Ex), 29 Schoendienst (Pr), two 33 Fox (Ex+ and Vg-Ex), 68 Howard RC (Ex), 103 Mathews (Ex), two 134 Feller (Ex and Vg), 202 Mantle (Vg-Ex+), and 213 Kell (Ex). Also includes sixteen umpires. This is an extensive collection of cards unto itself, with representation from almost all of Bowman's baseball-card issues from the late 1940s and early 1950s. The collection includes numerous highlights and presents an exceptional opportunity to acquire a substantial foundation for the assembly of a comprehensive Bowman baseball-card collection. Total: 838 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $4,147.50
