1886 N172 Old Judge New York Mets "Spotted Tie" Partial Set (9/16)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $14,220.00
The 1886 "Spotted Tie" series, featuring sixteen players from the New York Mets of the American Association, is one of the rarest, most desirable subsets of the N172 Old Judge set and are also among the earliest issued of all N172 Old Judges. Each player from this extremely popular Old Judge subset is featured in a portrait pose with his distinctive "spotted tie." Presented is a partial set consisting of nine of the sixteen rare N172 "Spotted Ties." This lot consists of the following: Stephen Behel (trimmed, otherwise Ex), James Donahue (Fr, ink stamp on reverse), Elmer Foster (skinned and trimmed; only top layer and missing Goodwin ad on bottom), Thomas Forster (Fr), William Holbert (Fr), Albert Mays (Gd), Thomas McLaughlin (Pr-Fr, presents as Vg-Ex on front but downgraded due to album removal and writing on reverse), Charles Reipschlager (Gd), and James Roseman (Fr). Missing the following seven cards for completion of the series: Brady, Crotty, Cushman, Hankinson, Lynch, Nelson, and Orr. The "Spotted Ties" have always been appreciated for their rarity and as a popular subset to the N172 series. All of these cards are rare. Even a sample is a significant N172 rarity. We have never had the opportunity to offer a complete set of "Spotted Ties." This is not a set, of course, but it is a great start toward completion of this extremely significant N172 Old Judge subset. Total: 9 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $14,220.00
