1951 Topps Red Backs Complete Set (52)
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,422.00
Complete 1951 Topps "Red Backs" set, including twelve cards graded and encapsulated by PSA or SGC (all submitted by our consignor, who collected back in the 1960s). The set is technically in mid-to-high grade but clearly with a superior appearance. The landmark "Red Backs" set is extremely significant as this was one of the first major baseball-card sets ever issued by Topps. Nine cards range from Nr/Mt-Mt to Mint, twenty-two cards range from Vg-Ex to Ex, and twenty-one cards are Vg. Keys: #1 Berra (Ex), 5 Rizzuto (Vg), 6 Reynolds (Ex), 8 Wynn (NM-MT 8), 13 Mitchell (MINT 9), 15 Kiner (EX 5), 16 Roe (Vg), 17 Bell (SGC EX 60), 20 DiMaggio (Vg-Ex/Ex), 22 Feller (NM-MT 8), 23 Boone (MINT 9), 24 Bauer (Vg), 26 Easter (NM-MT 8), 29 Kennedy (NM-MT 8), 30 Spahn (MINT 9), 31 Hodges (Ex), 36 Zernial/Chicago (SGC EX 60), 37 Westrum (NM-MT 8), 38 Snider (NM-MT 8), 39 Kluszewski (Ex), 50 Irvin (Vg), 52A Holmes/Hart. (Ex). Each card in the set, including the lesser-graded cards, has a bright, crisp Near Mint to Nr/Mt-Mt appearance but has been technically downgraded due to the very tiny surface factory wrinkles that are natural to the set and related to production. This set represents Topps' first major effort in the baseball-card business. The 1951 "Red Backs" Topps set is among the most significant, yet overlooked, of all early Topps cards, and in our opinion represents an extraordinary value. The SMR value for just the twelve graded cards (not including the forty ungraded cards) is $914. Total: 52 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $1,422.00
