1949 Bowman Complete Set (240) with 86 PSA-Graded Cards

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $5,925.00

1949 Bowman complete set of 240 cards. 5% range from Nr/Mt to Nr/Mt-Mt, 40% range from Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt (averaging Ex), 30% Vg, and 25% range from Pr to Gd (mostly Gd and includes a few sheet cut). This is an extremely attractive medium-grade set, and rarely offered this nice as a complete set. While the condition of cards from this set spans several grades, included are many high-grade cards and even the lesser-graded cards are very pleasing and exhibit bright colors and crisp focus. Many rookie cards of Hall of Famers are featured in this classic postwar issue, highlighted by Roy Campanella, Richie Ashburn, Duke Snider, Robin Roberts, Early Wynn, and Bob Lemon. Of the 240 cards in the set, eighty-six (36%) have been professionally graded and encapsulated by PSA, including the many key cards (Robinson, Paige, Snider, and Campanella). The PSA grades are as follows: NM-MT 8 (1 card): #129. NM 7 (11 cards): #40, 86 Pesky, 101, 114 Reynolds, 127, 133, 207 (MK), 209 Keller, 211, 214 Ashburn RC, and 218. EX-MT 6 (25 cards): #18 Thomson (MK), 26 Kell (MK), 46 Roberts RC, 48, 52 (MK), 74, 75, 76, 79, 83, 90, 97 (MK), 100 Hodges RC, 106, 109, 111 Schoendienst, 119, 122, 128 Vander Meer, 134, 164 Wertz RC, 178, 191, 202, and 216. EX+ 5.5 (1 card): #80. EX 5 (29 cards): #13, 23 Doerr, 54 (MK), 64 D. DiMaggio, 85a Mize NNOF, 89, 98a Rizzuto NNOF, 92, 94 Vernon RC, 96, 99, 103, 107 (MK), 110 Wynn RC, 116, 120, 140 (MK), 149, 155, 158, 162 Roe RC, 166, 192, 193, 208, 210 Gordon, 215, 226 Snider RC, and 235. VG-EX+ 4.5 (1 card): #1 Bickford. VG-EX 4 (10 cards): #20, 41, 47 Sain, 50 Robinson, 95, 102, 115, 130, 141, and 224 Paige. VG 3 (4 cards): #33 Spahn, 60 Berra, 233 Doby, and 238 Lemon RC (Vg-Ex). GOOD 2 (4 cards): # 24 Musial, 84 Campanella RC, 93, and 225 Coleman RC. Ungraded keys: #11 Boudreau (Gd), 27 Feller (cut from a sheet with double-printed, out-of-registry back), 29 Kiner (sheet-cut with double-printed, out-of-registry back), 36 Reese (sheet-cut with double-printed, out-of-registry back), 65 Slaughter (Fr), 70 Furillo RC (Gd-Vg), 175 Appling (Gd), 194 Branca RC (Gd), and 229 Lopat RC (Pr). 1949 Bowman is the most underrated set in terms of rarity among Topps and Bowman sets issued between 1948 and 1955. We rarely see 1949 Bowman sets, let alone in such clean and consistent condition. With some upgrades this is a set that could provide the foundation for a world-class 1949 Bowman set. The SMR value for fifty-nine of the PSA-graded cards is $3,063 (not including the nineteen cards graded less than PSA EX 5, including Robinson, Paige, Campy, and Musial, the eight qualified cards, and the remaining 154 ungraded cards!). Total: 240 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000+.
