1886 N172 Old Judge "Brownie Champs" Complete Set (13)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $5,925.00

The 1886 "Brownie Champs" set has always been among the most distinctive and popular of all N172 Old Judges. Each card from this highly sought-after Old Judge subset features portraits of players from this legendary Championship team. Presented is a complete set of all thirteen scarce N172 "Brownie Champs," including Hall of Famer Commy Comiskey. This lot consists of the following: Doc Bushong (Gd), Commy Comiskey (front is Vg-Ex, back damage/glue on reverse), Bob Caruthers (pencil on reverse, otherwise Vg-Ex), Dave Foutz (ink and pencil on reverse otherwise Gd), Will Gleason (Vg), Nat Hudson (Vg-Ex), Rudy Kemmler (Ex), Arlie Latham (skinned and remounted, still a nice-looking card), Nick Nicol (pencil on reverse, otherwise Vg), Tip O'Neil (Fr-Gd), Yank Robinson (Vg), Chris Von Der Ahe (pencil and small glue stain on reverse, otherwise Vg-Ex), and Curt Welch (Vg-Ex). This is a very impressive complete collection of "Brownie Champs," with most cards (as is often the case with Old Judges) having an appearance superior to their technical grades, which are affected by back damage no matter how insignificant. The distinctive style of the set makes this series of great interest not just to N172 set collectors, but to collectors who are interested in having one of the most significant and earliest subsets issued by Old Judge, featuring one of the most celebrated teams of the nineteenth century. Total: 13 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $5,925.00
