1949-1950 Toleteros Leon Day and Hilton Smith (2)
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $2,962.50
Extremely rare pair of Hall of Fame cards from the 1949-1950 Toleteros set consisting of the rookie card of Leon Day and the second-year card of Hilton Smith. Toleteros sets feature players from the Puerto Rican Winter League from 1948 to 1951, and are particularly significant as they feature many players who appear in few or no other card sets. Included are many Negro League stars, as well as many Major Leaguers who played in the Puerto Rican Winter League during the off-season. These cards represent one of the very few contemporary cards ever issued of these two players. Each card has been graded POOR 10 by SGC due to paper loss in the center of the reverse. Toleteros cards were intended to be mounted in albums and are often found with paper loss caused by removal from an album. Each card presents much better than the assigned grade. Day presents Vg-Ex with even wear to the corners and very light surface cracking visible. Smith presents Vg with corner wear the sole condition issue. Very attractive, technically low-grade examples from this extremely rare issue featuring two of the all-time great Negro League Hall of Famers. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $2,962.50
