1948 Leaf #11 Phil Rizzuto BVG MINT 9
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $2,014.50
Graded MINT 9 by BVG. This is the only #11 Phil Rizzuto from the 1948 Leaf set at this level, with none graded higher, out of the 57 examples evaluated by Beckett Vintage Grading to date. PSA and SGC have only graded exactly three MINT examples combined, with none higher, out of 547 cards submitted for their review. As indicated by these population reports, this is a very hard card to find in extremely high grade. 1948 Leafs have always posed a problem for condition-conscious collectors. In addition to the many normal problems encountered with this issue (excessive toning, general wear from fragile paper stock, soft corners, centering issues, and print lines), collectors also have to deal with the wildly varying degrees of print quality that characterize the set. It is easy to see why 1948 Leafs are one of the most difficult of all issues to collect in high grade. This example is perfectly centered with razor-sharp corners and near-flawless registration. The reverse is clean with boldly printed black text. This is a crisp, very sharp looking example of one of Rizzuto's most classic cards. While, as always, there is no guarantee that a card graded by Beckett (or SGC, or any other company) will receive the same grade from PSA (and due to this fact often sell at a discount to SMR), the SMR value of this card graded MINT 9 by PSA is $3,750. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,014.50
