1934-1936 R318 Batter-Up Complete Set (192)

Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $5,925.00

Extremely attractive and very rarely seen complete set of R318 National Chicle Batter-Up. Their striking colors, unusual standup design, and rarity compared to other 1930s sets make Batter-Up one of the most fascinating, distinctive, and difficult-to-complete of all sets from the 1930s. This classic 1930s gum-card set, issued by National Chicle over a period of three years (1934-1936), includes an incredible fifty-three Hall of Famers, including Dizzy Dean, Rogers Hornsby, Jimmie Foxx, Hank Greenberg, and many others. The rare high-number series cards (#81-192), which represent over half the cards in the set, make completing the Batter-Up set one of the greatest challenges of all 1930s issues. The complete set of 1934-1936 R318 Batter-Up consists of 192 cards and is universally recognized as one of the most significant of all prewar baseball-card issues. Condition: 30% range in grade from Vg/Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt (averaging Vg-Ex/Ex), 20% range from Gd to Vg; with few exceptions the remaining 50% have a similar distribution of condition with reference to the fronts, but most are in technically lower grades only due to minor back damage that is so commonly associated with R318 Batter Up (a tape mark, a remnant of scrapbook paper, or, in a few cases, writing). These cards are designed with die-cut backgrounds that can be punched out and folded back to allow each card to stand up. Because of this design, many R318s are naturally found in damaged condition, and in many cases are found with the die-cut backgrounds entirely lost. All of the card backgrounds in this collection (except #98) are complete and intact. Many cards in this set have been downgraded due to various very minor flaws that are naturally associated with this issue, and have an appearance far superior to their technically accurate assigned grades. We have selected three cards to be graded by SGC. Keys: #1 Berger (Pr), 3 Lopez (Fr-Gd), 5 Hubbell (Gd-Vg), 6 Terry (Vg-Ex), 8 Bottomley (Vg), 10 Ferrell (Pr), 14 Traynor (Vg), 16 Hafey (Vg), 17 Waner (Gd-Vg), 21 Vaughn (Vg-Ex), 23 Gomez (Vg), 24 Averill (Pr), 25 Cochrane (Vg/Vg-Ex), 27 Ott (Vg), 28 Foxx (VG/EX+ 55), 30 Dickey (Fr), 31 Grove (Pr), 32 Cronin (Fr), 33 Frisch (Fr-Gd), 34 Simmons (Vg), 35 Hornsby (Pr-Fr), 36 Lyons (Pr-Fr), 37 Maranville (Pr), 42 Gehringer (EX 60), 45 Lazzeri (Vg-Ex/Ex), 57 Greenberg (Fr-Gd), 64 Dean (VG 40), 73 Wilson (Pr), 77 Manush (Vg-Ex/Ex), 85 Goslin (Fr), 86 Gomez (Vg), 100 Traynor (Ex), 111 Hayes/Lyons (Fr), 113 Averill (Pr-Fr), 115 Andrews/Bottomley (Vg), 117 Dickey (Fr), 119 Lyons (Ex+), 122 Lindstrom (Pr-Fr), 124 Appling (Ex/Ex-Mt), 126 Ferrell (Fr), 129 Lombardi (Fr), 130 Gehringer (Pr-Fr), 136 Hartnett (Pr-Fr), 138 Herman (Pr), 144 Foxx (Fr), 145 Medwick (Fr), 149 Berg (Ex+), 153 Grove (Vg), 156 Durocher (Pr), 157 Waner (Fr), 173 Frisch (Pr), 179 Bottomley (Ex+), 180 Jackson (Vg), 183 Cronin (Gd-Vg), and 185 Klein (Fr). This is a very attractive and rarely offered complete set of this unusual and very substantial 1930s prewar issue, which as noted includes fifty-three Hall of Famers, and is particularly difficult to complete due to the relative rarity of the scarce high-number cards (#81-192), which represent such a large portion of the set. Consigned directly from the family of legendary collector Paul Pollard. Total: 192 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000+. SOLD FOR $5,925.00
