1941 Play Ball Complete Set (72)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,896.00

Extremely attractive mid-grade complete set of the 1941 Play Ball series issued by Gum, Inc., one of card collecting's all-time classic gum issues. This full-color 72-card set includes many Hall of Famers and stars, including Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams. 35% range from Vg to Vg-Ex (with a few slightly better), 50% range from Fr to Gd, and 15% lesser. Nine cards are graded and encapsulated by PSA (except one SGC). Keys: #1 Miller (Fr-Gd), 6 Hubbell (VG-EX 4), 8 Ott (Vg), 10 Vaughan (Fr), 13 Foxx (GOOD 2), 14 Williams (SGC FAIR 20), 15 Cronin (Vg), 18 Greenberg (VG 3), 19 Gehringer (VG 3), 20 Ruffing (EX-MT 6), 39 Henrich (Gd), 54 Reese RC (PR-FR 1), 60 Klein (Gd), 61 V. DiMaggio (Pr), 63 D. DiMaggio (VG 3), 64 Doerr (Gd-Vg), 70 Dickey (Gd), 71 J. DiMaggio (PR-FR 1), and 72 Gomez (Fr). One of the great things about card collecting is that the classic card sets can be collected in any condition, on any budget. This set may be far from Mint, but it is a still a very attractive and very consistent set with many condition highlights (including very pleasing examples of key cards Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio). This set offers an outstanding value, and is much more affordable than a higher-grade set of this very popular prewar gum issue. The SMR value for just the nine graded cards (not including the 63 ungraded cards) is $895. Total: 72 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $1,896.00
