1941 Gum, Inc. Play Ball Full Uncut Production Sheet (#25-48)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $2,962.50

Offered is one of card collecting's rarest uncut sheets: a complete 24-card uncut Gum, Inc., production sheet of 1941 Play Ball. This sheet features the second series of twenty-four cards in the set (#25-48). Full 24-card production sheets of 1941 Play Ball are so rare that we are aware of fewer than ten known examples. The offered sheet is one of only four 1941 Play Ball 24-card production sheets (not to be confused with the more plentiful 12-card 1941 Play Ball "paper issue" card sheets) that we can recall having seen offered at auction. We are pleased to be able to present a third series sheet (#49-72) separately in this auction as well. This is a very presentable sheet with only minor flaws resulting from handling and storage over the past seventy years. The cards display some natural age toning, but with crisp images and perfect registration. There is heavy creasing affecting portions of the three cards positioned on the right edge of the sheet while lighter creasing affects four cards on the left side. Light, even corner wear, along with a small crease in the bottom right corner, is present. The interior cards are largely unaffected and well-preserved with only a light surface crease visible on the reverse of the Hemsley and Higgins cards in the center. Considering the age and odd size of this sheet, it is amazing that it survived without more serious condition issues. Play Ball sheets are of a far greater rarity than Goudey and other uncut gum-card sheets of this era. It is interesting to note that Play Balls were printed in vertical 24-card sheets, as opposed to the horizontal format of Goudey sheets. This is an incredible rarity that would make a tremendous addition to any uncut sheet collection or companion to any 1941 Play Ball set. The sheet measures 10 x 18.75 inches. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $2,962.50
