1939 R303-A Goudey Premiums Collection (59)

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,422.00

Original-owner "childhood" collection of fifty-nine assorted (twenty different) 1939 R303-A Goudey Premiums, including sixteen Hall of Famers. The R303-A set has always been the rarest of the three R303 sets by far. Cards from this set are often in somewhat rough condition (creases, back damage, etc.). This group is comprised of cards far nicer than usually found for this issue. All of these cards are fresh, clean, very impressive examples. We have downgraded some cards from Ex (or better) condition mostly due to very light creases. Keys: four Dickey (Vg-Ex, two Vg, Gd), five Gehringer (Vg-Ex and four Vg), four Gomez (Vg and three Gd), and three Simmons (all Gd). The balance of the cards grade Vg+ overall. These premiums have received relatively little attention from collectors compared to traditional gum cards of the era (in part because only in very recent years have the grading companies designed holders for cards of this size), and a case can easily be made that they represent one of the best values of all rare 1930s baseball gum-card issues. Total: 59 premiums. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,422.00
