1934 R320 Goudey Near-Complete Set Including Gehrig (94 of 96)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $6,517.50
Near-complete set of 1934 Goudey Gum consisting of 94 different of the 96 cards in the set, missing only the following two cards for completion: #6 Dean and 37 Gehrig (portrait). 1934 Goudey, also commonly referred to as the "Lou Gehrig says..." set, is one of the most popular of all 1930s bubble-gum card issues. Included are stars such as Lou Gehrig, Dizzy Dean, Hank Greenberg, Lefty Grove, and Jimmy Foxx, among others, as well as the very scarce 24-card high-number series (#73-96) that has always made completing this classic set especially challenging for collectors. This particular group was discovered by our consignor at a garage sale over a decade ago. The cards were beautifully preserved on scrapbook pages, neatly mounted with old-fashioned paper corner mounts, a sign that strongly suggests that this group originated from a very early serious card collector or the very collector who saved them as a youngster. A majority of the cards present with particularly bold colors and bright white borders as a result of their protection from all elements including light. We have selected six cards to be graded by SGC. Keys: #1 Foxx (VG 40), 2 Cochrane (EX 60), 7 Durocher (Ex), 10 Klein (Ex+), 11 Waner (Ex), 12 Hubbell (Fr), 13 Frisch (Ex), 18 Manush (Gd), 19 Grove (EX 60), 21 Terry (EX 60), 22 Vaughn (Vg), 23 Gehringer (VG/EX 50), 27 Appling (Ex), 31 Gehrig (GOOD 30), 34 Hafey (Vg-Ex), 35 Lombardi (Fr), and 62 Greenberg (Vg+). The condition of the 24 rare high numbers (#73-96) is as follows: Eight Gd to Vg including #96 Deshong (last card in set) and sixteen Pr to Fr including #90 Cuyler. The balance of the cards grade as follows: Thirty-three Vg-Ex to Ex (almost all with superior appearance but downgraded due to the light impressions from the corner mounts), sixteen Gd to Vg, and four slightly lesser. This is a very attractive near-complete set of this classic Goudey issue, which is highlighted by eighteen Hall of Famers (including Lou Gehrig), and twenty-four scarce high-number series cards. The equivalent SMR value for just the six SGC-graded cards (not including the 88 ungraded cards) is $1,435. Total: 94 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+.
