1887 N175 Gypsy Queen Tug Arundel

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $829.50

Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. Scarce N175 "Small" Gypsy Queen of John (Tug) Arundel of the Indianapolis Hoosiers. This card is the same size and general format as N172 Old Judge, but with a slightly different design, and advertising for Goodwin's Gypsy Queen brand of tobacco. There has always been some confusion as to the catalog number of the smaller Gypsy Queens (similar in size to N172s and not to be confused with the even rarer large-sized N175 Gypsy Queens, of which nine different cards are known) because the catalog does not distinguish between the two sizes of cards represented by "N175." This card has an extremely strong image, a quality highly prized among nineteenth-century collectors, and as can easily be seen displays much better than its assigned grade, with minimal wear to the corners and edges and a reverse that displays only minor toning and a hint of pencil erasure on the reverse (this is virtually impossible to even see but is responsible for the harsh technical grade). An extremely sharp-looking sample from this rare and unusual Old Judge-related nineteenth-century issue. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $829.50
